ActiveSpeed Performance Monitor
Active Tools has been producing innovative equipment for rowers and coaches since 2002, and advanced rowing electronics since 2007. The ActiveSpeed is a new addition to our range and we have worked with many people to develop the best possible tool to help you go faster.
The ActiveSpeed gives you all the information you need and allows you to share it live with your coach. It monitors, records, and shares speed (from GPS or wireless impeller), average speed, stroke rate (from the internal accelerometer), stroke count, Check, distance, time, and heart rate. You can also program workouts on the device and download data wirelessly with our DataFlow app.
Custom backlit display
To maximize size, we created our own display where you can view two, four, or six data fields and quickly configure and save screens for different activities. You can create up to six screen layouts under each of the 'Training', 'Racing', and 'Power' sections.
Each field can be set to display any parameter, or left blank, and all can be flipped to highlight important statistics.
Programmable workouts
Both simple and complex workouts can be set up and saved on your ActiveSpeed, and key features include:
- You can program both work and rest periods in strokes, distance, or time, and you have the option to continue recording heart rate during rest periods.
- Workouts can have delayed timing starts, both at the initial start-up and at the end of rest periods.
- You can set 'undefined length' rest periods in workouts to account for factors such as river traffic, turning, etc.
- Standing starts begin when the ActiveSpeed detects the first boat movement. The display then flashes when it sees you 'slowing down' at the end of a stretch or the end of a race, and if you press the main button within 20 seconds the timer will jump back to the time it saw you slow down.
- You can set up to twenty-five custom workouts and six of these can be saved to a smaller favorites menu for easy access.
- You can also specify a target range within workouts for heart rate, speed, or stroke rate, and the device will indicate when you are outside the set range.
Built-in coach link
When the included antennas are connected, the data monitored by a rower's ActiveSpeed can be displayed on a coach's device. It is also possible to link to a further four ActiveSpeeds, the data of which the coach can then view by pressing a single button.
The transmission range is at least 200 meters, but is generally considerably longer.
In the future, it will be possible to connect multiple ActiveSpeeds to a tablet, using an Active Tools router/data storage unit, so that data from more than one unit can be viewed simultaneously. This includes output from our RapidFit Coaching and Data Oarlocks.
Simple data transfer via app
Our DataFlow app is available for both iOS and Android and allows easy data transfer to RoweRS, Rowsandall, Training Peaks, Strava, Golden Cheetah, etc. This includes both performance data and the data of the courses you have rowed.
You can then view and analyze both your on-water and land training that you have transferred to these sites.
The app also allows you to update the firmware on your ActiveSpeed and in the future it will allow you to view and analyze data and force curves from our RapidFit Coaching and Data oarlocks.

The ActiveFlow is a new addition to our range. It is a cost effective and easy to use performance monitor which can display stroke rate (from an internal accelerometer), time, stroke count, and Check (rate compensated). You can also programme workouts on the unit and recall data from recorded pieces. It is powered by three AAA batteries to give a long battery life. (Batteries not included)
